Allies in Action

Girls Inc.’s Allies in Action curriculum is founded on the belief that relational aggression between girls is a socialized behaviour that has been normalized in North American culture. We believe that girl-on-girl violence stems from the following:

  • Historical mythology that depicts girls and women as manipulative and deceptive
  • A media saturated culture that equates female value with physical appearance
  • A lack of productive “conflict” coaching for girls

Allies in Action empowers girls to acknowledge relational aggression as hurtful, analyze the contexts that shape these behaviours, and learn skills for navigating conflict. We take an empowering approach that is engaging, fast paced, and reflective. We work within peer groups to strengthen communication, build relationships and break down barriers. This program is not intended as a “quick fix” or “cure-all” but rather as one piece of a much larger strategy involving parents, staff, and community members.
